Thank you to Popo Tam! 3 out of 4 second grade classes made it to the Chinese New Year read aloud to learn more about the Chinese culture. She then spent another hour with just our class. Students got to draw eyes on one of the zodiac animals, colored them and then raced one another. (Pictures attached). If student bring home a string, we attached it to the chair and they had to stay on knees to get the animal from the start to the chair. We also learned how to bow and tasted coconut candy and haw flakes. I learned how the 12 animals were picked for the Chinese Zodiac and that the Chinese New Years is their only holiday of the year.
We finished and completed everything today- garden class was inside and students learned the body parts of the butterfly and life cycle of a butterfly and also learned strategies on how to find words in our word search. We borrowed and returned books at the CLL. Finished our last day with Mr. Dan, drama, and Syria read aloud. I was very impressed with how students were abled to communicate about free, peace, conflict, forbidden, and prejudice (kid friendly explanation). Students were able to show empathy for others in the village that had hardship, they made their own choice and provided a reason of if they should stay in their village or move away, and some persuaded others to join them in their thinking. This week, students showed cooperation, participation, and understood that everyone has a choice that makes a difference- what choice will they make? Friendly reminder: please ask your student 2-3 questions about their story that they read for book log. Student should go back, find the answer to prove their answer and restate answer in a complete sentence. This will allow them to continue to practice reading comprehension- a BIG, HUGE focus in second grade. Look at child's responses to the fluency questions- are they writing in a complete sentence? Does it start with a capital letter and end with a period? Lastly, did they use part of the question in their answer to make it a complete sentence? Did they answer the question? I want them prepared for 3rd grade and I don't want any of them to struggle with reading (reasons for why I started fluency folders). Thank you so much for the thoughtful valentines day goodies. I told the students that I was inspired by our speaker who came in and talked about the trash in the ocean and one point is to use less plastic. Look around you- do you see how much plastic is used? Anyway, so as the speaker was talking, I bought my kids (your child) a bamboo toothbrush. It is new and clean when I gave it to them. I figured it goes hand in hand with all the "love and heart" candy they are eating today. :) We also celebrated Jared's birthday at the end of the day. Yes, all of this was accomplished. Please read the following from Mrs. Smith and visit our class website for more pictures (sorry, I haven't been updating it). Oh lastly, feel free to have your students go on to the online programs to practice even if it not assigned as homework. Thank you and have a wonderful weekend, stay dry. Mrs. Hamasaki
